Away in a southern corner of the wide and expansive Pacific Ocean, there lies a land, shimmering in the morning sun. This land is known as Te Ika A Maui, and this is the story of why it’s so named and how it came about.
Once there was a boy named Maui he had four older brothers. Maui was not like his older brothers, they were jealous of him and a little afraid of his powers, so they did not include him on any of their hunting or fishing trips.
One day Maui heard his brothers saying “First thing in the morning, we will have to wake-up early and go fishing so Maui wont follow”. So that night Maui sneaked out into the canoe and hid himself under flax and ropes and soon he fell asleep.
The next day Maui’s brothers went inside the canoe and soon they were paddling off. They felt something under the flax and ropes all of a sudden “It is I, Maui whos going fishing with you” Shouted Maui. Maui’s brothers looked with surprised “ But you cant go fishing with us, I guess we would have to go home” Said one of his brothers” “ NO!” Said Maui. Then all of a sudden the canoe was in the middle of the sea beacause Maui used his powers.
They all were fishing then the brothers heard Maui saying “Help, Help me, I caught a big one” But his brothers did nothing until a big great fish jump up and landed in the canoe. Mauis brothers was being selfish talking about what part they are going to get from the fish while Maui was at the bottom of the ocean.
From that day on people came and lived on the Great Fish and now it is known as AOTEAROA.
